Giant Puffball
The giant puffball (Calvatia gigantea) is commonly found in meadows, fields and deciduous forests during the late summer and autumn. It is easily recognised by its size and shape: typical specimens are about the size of a football, and more or less round, although some have been reported as growing up to 1.5 m (5 feet) across.

The giant puffball is only edible when it is young and white; as it matures, the flesh begins to darken and turns into spore dust, then starts to rot and decompose. The meat has a bland flavour, which has been likened to sweetbreads or tofu. However, it can make a tasty meal when sliced into steaks and fried in bacon fat.
