Angostura Bitters
The term 'bitters' refers to spirits that have been flavoured with bitter roots, herbs or spices such as cascarilla, gentian, orange peel and quinine. Angostura bitters is made using a secret recipe of natural herbs and spices and was originally created in 1824 as a remedy for fever and stomach disorders.
This pink coloured, clove-scented liquid is most commonly used in the bar to create drinks such as pink gin (Angostura Bitters and gin) and Americano (Angostura Bitters, sweet red vermouth, Campari and soda). However, this bitter liquid can also work well in the kitchen. It imparts a delicious flavour to sauces (particularly tarragon sauce and mustard sauce) and can enhance the taste of nourishing dishes such as shepherd's pie, beef stew or baked beans. It also works well when sprinkled into fruit salad or added into ice cream or sorbet recipes.
