Black Treacle
Black treacle is a thick, black sticky syrup which is made as a by-product of sugar refining. It has a distinctive bitter, almost burnt, flavour that work well in recipes such as toffee, Christmas pudding, fruit cake and gingerbread.

It is not as sweet as golden syrup (sometimes known as light treacle) and the two may not be used interchangeably in recipes. It is, however, very similar in consistency, colour and flavour to dark molasses, and either one may be used as a substitute for the other.
