Watermelons

Although watermelons are usually thought of as being related to sweet melons, they are in fact two completely different species. There are a vast number of different varieties of watermelon, ranging in weight from 2.7 kg (6 lbs) to a massive 13.6 kg (30 lbs), round or elongated in shape, with flesh colours that vary from pink to dark red and yellow.

However, whatever, shape, size or colour they are, all watermelons boast a deliciously juicy, airy flesh with a bland sweet flavour. Although most also contain hundreds of black, inedible seeds, there are now some 'seedless' varieties available, which, although not completely seedless, have only a few pale, soft, edible seeds.

Watermelon is particularly tasty when served chilled in thick slices as a way to quench thirst on a hot day, or in chunks as part of a fruit salad.
