Tree Tomatoes

Also known as a tamarillo, the tree tomato is a small, egg shaped fruit with an orange-red, smooth, glossy skin. The flesh is reddish-golden with blood red juice and black, edible seeds. Although the flesh has a tart but sweet flavour, the skin is intensely bitter and must be removed before eating. This may be done by plunging the fruit into boiling water for a minute, or simply by peeling it away.

Tamarillos can be used much in the same way as tomatoes, and are often made into chutneys, salsas or sauces. They may also be eaten raw, sliced and sprinkled with sugar.
