Star Fruit
Also known as a carambola, the starfruit resembles an elongated yellow Chinese lantern with deep ridges running from top to bottom. When sliced crosswise, it forms perfect star shapes, ideal for garnishing salads and desserts. The pieces have a crisp apple-like texture, with a mildly sweet and sour citrus flavour. This mild flavour develops more fully if the pieces are lightly poached in a sugar syrup until just tender. They may also be eaten with roast duck or other savoury dishes.
