Pineapples

The exotic-looking pineapple is sold ready-to-eat, and will not continue to ripen once picked. Pineapples have a wonderfully sweet aroma and their golden-yellow, juicy flesh has a sweet, mildly acidic flavour.

Although they usually taste best when eaten fresh, either on their own or in fruit salads, they may also be used in a range of cooked desserts, such as flambéed with cinnamon and rum, baked in the shell, used to fill sweet omelettes or added to cakes such as pineapple upside down pudding. They can also be grilled and served with savoury dishes, including gammon, poultry or pork chops, or made into chutneys or salsas.
