Papayas

The papaya (or paw paw) is pear-shaped tropical fruit with a thin, green skin which develops to a golden colour on ripening. Inside, its juicy, orangey-pink flesh contrasts dramatically with the black seeds. Once peeled and de-seeded, the flesh has a subtle, mildly sweet taste and a melon-like texture.

Fresh, ripe papaya is delicious eaten on its own with a squeeze of lime juice or added to fruit or dark green leaf salads. It may also be cooked in pies or baked with butter.
