Figs

A fig is a thin-skinned fruit that may be split open to reveal its soft, sweet flesh embedded with many small, edible seeds. There are two major types of fig: the green and the black. Black figs are available all year round, and are generally larger and sweeter than the green variety, which are only available from November to July.

Both green and black figs are entirely edible, and may be eaten complete with their skin. Fresh figs are particularly good when served with Parma ham or blue cheese. They may also be poached in wine or baked.
