Cape Gooseberries

Native to South America, this small, round, bright orange berry is found inside a papery outer husk shaped like a Chinese lantern. Also known as physalis, the Cape gooseberry has a firm texture and an acid-sweet taste with a slight citrus flavour. The small fruits (approximately the same size as a cherry tomato) are delicious when eaten on their own, or used as a garnish for sweet and savoury dishes. Coated in dark chocolate or fondant icing, they may be served with petit fours for an after-dinner treat. However, they are probably at their best when used to make jams, jellies and syrups.
