Bilberries
Also known as blaeberries in Scotland and whortleberries in north America, bilberries are slightly smaller and more tart than their American counterpart, the blueberry. They grow abundantly on heaths and moors and may be picked from the second week of July until the end of August.

With their tart, tangy flavour, bilberries are ideal for making into jams and jellies, or for combining with other summer fruits to add an element of sharpness. Cooked bilberries are particularly good when added to Greek yogurt and crushed meringues to create a quick and easy dessert.
