Skimmed Milk
With a fat content of only 0.1%, skimmed milk tastes and looks less creamy than any other type of milk. As with semi-skimmed milk, it contains less calories than whole milk, but with more protein and some of the vitamins. However, it has less vitamin A and vitamin D as these fat-soluble vitamins are removed with the cream.
Skimmed milk is sold in the following ways:
- Cartons with a red label
- Plastic bottles with a red cap
- Glass bottles with a blue and silver checked foil top
Uses
Skimmed milk is ideal for adults who want to reduce their fat and calorie intake. However, it should not be given to children under the age of 5 as they need the extra calories found in whole milk for growth.
Storage
Skimmed milk should be kept in the fridge and used within five days of opening. Cartons and plastic bottles may also be frozen successfully; after thawing, simply shake the milk well to ensure that it is well blended.
