Yeast-Free Breads

Not all breads are made using yeast as a leavening agent; there are many quick, simple recipes that are leavened with chemical agents such as baking powder or bicarbonate of soda. These leavening agents react quickly when combined with liquid ingredients, and so the milk, egg or water is usually only added to the flour, baking powder and other dry ingredients just before baking.

Yeast-free bread recipes may be thin enough to pour like a batter into muffin tins or loaf tins, whilst others form a more dough-like consistency, which requires to be kneaded for a short time before baking.

In this section, you'll find information about a range of yeast-free breads, such as the Scottish bannock, Irish soda bread and American cornbread.
