Take a look in any cooking shop or department store and you'll find a huge variety of shapes and sizes of pans; some are for general use, whilst others are suited to more specific tasks.

We've put together a guide to some of the major styles of pans, some of which are essential, some for particular styles of cooking. If you are equipping a kitchen from scratch, it may be best to buy a starter pack of a few saucepans and a large double-handed pan. This basic set will cover your essential cooking needs, then you can buy additional pans as and when you require them.
